Randy's High Seas Adventures


This first picture is a ship similar to one I, as Randy Stubbs,
would have sailed on with Francis Drake on our circumnavigation
of the globe in 1580.  We were the first Englishmen to 
accomplish this feat.






By way of introduction to Randy's character I offer this little 
ditty I made up sang to the tune of Wild Rover. Oh, and look, 
there's a picture of old Randy his self from one of those magic boxes!



 
Me names Randy Stubbs          
and I sailed the high seas

O' the life of a sailor 
was perfect for me.
        
I spent all my money 
on wenches and beer

and sailed the wide ocean 
with never a fear!



But now it's
no, nay, never

no, nay, never, no more
will I sail the wide ocean

no, never, no mooore.



A scurvy arse Spaniard
got a lucky shot

and shattered my knee cap,
ooo, that hurt , a lot!



I still chases the wenches
but they has to run slow,

and they're happy they did
if they'll give it a go



So now it's
no, nay never

no. nay never, no more
will I sail the wide ocean

no, never no mooore.









That pretty well sums up my characters character. Randy sailed 'round
the world with Sir Francis Drake and, according to him, was instrumental
in Drakes success. I (Gary) look forward to the faire every year
(I've been Randy  for three years now) with great anticipation. I
love interacting with the visitors, old and young.

This picture is the ship that I "sailed" on in the US Navy. It, like Drakes ship, 
was made of wood! It's an ocean going minesweeper, the USS Conquest, MSO 488.
I also served aboard the Esteem, MSO 438, sailing to the Far East, known in 
the Navy as a WestPac cruise, in late 1959. The Conquest and the Esteem were 
in the same squadron.

The next picture is the ship that I nearly circumnavigated
the globe on in the 1970s, the Glomar Challenger.



The Challenger was a computer positioned Deep Sea drilling ship. We 
would take a crew of scientists, marine tech's and roughnecks
(drilling crew) to sea for two months at a time and drill for core
samples from the ocean bottom. The purpose of the project was to study 
the mechanism of continental drift and plate tectonics. 



The Glomar Explorer was another dynamic positioned vessel. I worked 
aboard the Explorer after its initial mission had become history. 
It was leased by another company to mine manganese nodules, but it
didn't really work for that either. It was condidered to replace the
Challenger, but that never came to be. To my knowledge it was finally
scrapped.

    

I worked on the Discoverer 7 Seas         I worked aboard the Ben Ocen Lancer
for SEDCO for a brief period while        for ODECO in the Gulf of Mexico for
they were in the yard for refitting,      a year. They left the Gulf for Brazil 
then sailed aboard her during the         and I decided I'd let them go without
cruise to the Congo.                      me.
